THE
jubilant celebrations that erupted in the pouring rain at Alberton
were emotional and unbridled. The culmination of plenty of blood
sweat and tears that had been sacrificed since PHOS last tasted
A grade Premiership glory in 1989. The Phantoms that represented
the club that season can take their place in club history as our
first side to break through for Division One glory.
The season was a coming of age for the club. Struggling early, Gary
Peach and his men turned it around mid season to gel a into
tough talented unit that would ultimately go all the way.
A 79 point drubbing at hands of Broadview in round 2 and 2-4-1 record
after round 7 saw the Phantoms in the relegation zone. A gutsy home
victory against Goodwood the following week and a magnificent come
from behind victory away to Broadview in Round 11 confirmed the
Phantoms as a real finals threat.
A gritty 11 point victory in the Qualifying final over Kilburn saw
the Phantoms face pace setters Broadview in the 2nd Semi in which
The Tigers ran out convincing 44 point winners.
The Phantoms performance in the preliminary final against Port District
under lights at Norwood Oval was one of the finest in the club's
history. Dominating all over the ground, PHOS Camden crushed their
opposition by 83 points, Port District scoring their solitary goal
in the final quarter.
The score:
PHOS
Camden 16 . 4 (100)
Port District 1 . 11 (17)
A sour note to this match was the injury suffered to club stalwart
David Rosman. Rossi was on fire, having a wonderful season
as a spiritual 'on field' leader of the club. David was felled with
a severely corked thigh courtesy of ex SANFL Magpie Rohan Smith
late in the game. A cowardly act by a bloke that has tasted heaps
of premiership success at league level. He denied David his place
in the Grand Final but galvanized the side to 'do it for Rossi'.
Smith can think what he wants but Port District have to deal with
determined Phantoms each time they meet.
Grand Final Wrap up by
Gordon Armstrong
The Phantom menace has arrived.
Unheralded and unfashionable, PHOS Camden has struck a chord for
lovers of the underdog with it's gutsy debut win in Amateur football's
holy grail - the Division One Grand Final. PHOS won 7-5 to 6-6 without
kicking a goal in the second half.
PHOS Camden, entering the season's finale as second elect, a position
it has been in for most of the season, again proved another football
cliché that Grand finals are 50/50 bets - regardless of form.
Under the dim lights of Alberton Oval the Phantoms turned on the
power to harass and harangue Broadview at every opportunity - setting
the tone for the evening with an inspiring first quarter where it
held the might of the tiger to just 1.2 with the breeze while kicking
1.0 itself.
The scoring flood gates opened in the second quarter for PHOS with
Malcolm Pohlner and Daniel Rowe looking ominous in
attack. By half time the Phantoms had kicked clear to a 7.1 to 3.2
lead and supporters were daring to hope that a flag could be just
around the corner.
Broadview showed it's tough qualities by edging back despite the
Phantoms' close in work to see the difference just five points with
just one quarter to play. PHOS still looked to be in the driver's
seat with the wind to follow but Broadview hit in hard early. The
Phantoms responded, the defence in particular, as mean as ever to
keep the Tigers at bay.
With about 10 minutes to play the PHOS prayers were answered when
the heavens opened up sending spectators scampering up to the grandstands
and players on both sides slipping and sliding in desperate pursuit
of the ball. PHOS showed enormous pluck to keep the ball bottled
up in it's forward line, milking up several minutes. But then Broadview
prepared for one last hoorah as it edged the ball back up its line
with three marks in a row to get to half forward. But again the
Phantoms, goaless in the second half and defending a meager five-point
buffer, had come too far to let a lapse in concentration cost it
as Broadview again upped the ante.
The siren signaled the start of emotional scenes in the Phantom
camp and utter despair for the gallant Broadview which had not lost
a game since July 8 - it's average winning margin in that time a
comprehensive 55 points.
Picking out best players for PHOS was a tough contract with every
player having at least some impact during the night.Jaran Blethyn
deserved his best on ground medal with a solid performance in defence,
while Josh Story battled his heart out in ruck against a
class act in Danny Zanker. Damian Newham, after missing the
past seven weeks through injury, was the wildcard inclusion and
played a significant role in pushing PHOS forward, captain Tim
Johns was superb deep in defence and Adrian Pope and
Ben Newberry were hard workers again.
Joe Wyatt gave the side plenty of drive with his second and
third attacks on the ball and Tim Hammond also made sure
that the Phantoms would not be outmuscled when the going got tough.
Off the playing field new coach Gary Peach has been a sensational
acquisition for the club. With a top back up staff Peach, who paid
tribute to past coaches Brad Ryan and Duane Massey,
pulled some master coaching strokes during the season and enforced
a strong work ethos and team spirit.
Earlier in the season the team looked headed for relegation when
it trudged off Salisbury North oval an eight - point losers but
then strung together a 14-week period where it lost just the one
game.
Best and Fairest - Adrian Pope

Goalkicker - Malcolm Pohlner (47)
