The
'96 C grade side won the club's first premiership since the amalgamation
of PHOS and Camden, with a stunning victory over arch-enemy Lockleys.
The '95 C grade side fought out an epic battle against Lockleys
in the preliminary final, which was drawn at full time, an extra
20 minutes played, and it was still a draw. Phos Camden emerged
triumphant the following week after a couple of very tough games.
The battle lines were drawn.
The '96 Phantoms were to have the upper hand over Lockleys all season.
Their clashes were hard and tough affairs in the minor round and
semi-final matches, and the grand final was no different.
An even first quarter saw the Phantoms edge out a 6 point lead at
quarter time, but were overrun by Lockleys in the second quarter,
to go in trailing by 9 points at half time. The Phantoms came out
firing in the second half with Lockleys leading by just 3 points
at three quarter time, the final quarter was a seesawing battle.
An undisciplined Lockleys gave away some silly free kicks which
resulted in goals, and that gave PHOSC the ascendancy to bust the
game apart and finish them off running out eventual winners by 3
goals.
The team had an eclectic mix of players. Young James White
(who was still eligible for under 15's), long time champion Paul
Greenbank, the late great David 'Savvy' Langford, the
sensational 'Smooth Talkin' Adam Nolan, ever reliable Frank
Rutter, James 'Barney' Prater, David 'Stan' Stanley and
the exciting Guy Valance, to name a few. There were a few
guys that came out of retirement and some now play in the over 35's.
The whole thing was orchestrated by playing coach and club stalwart,
Tony Hinrichson, who led by example all season. All in all,
it was a great season, a great grand final with both sides earning
each others respect, and a great bunch of blokes that got us through.
Final scores in the big one:
PHOSC 10.8 (68)
Lockleys 7.8 (50)
